After Sir Edwin Landseer, R.A. (London 1802-1873 London)

Hafed, the artist’s favourite deerhound

Chalk study

22 x 31.5 cm

£350

The present work derives from Landseer’s well-known image of his favourite deerhound, Hafed, originally painted in 1834 and reproduced in printed form soon after.  Our drawing has been executed in reverse to the print and has notable differences such as the dynamic shading behind the hound and a loose finish to the neck.  As such it represents an interesting free copy of Landseer’s original by a talented albeit unknown 19th century artist.
