George Augustus Wallis was an English Romantic landscape artist active mainly in Italy, where he travelled widely.  His work originally displayed Neoclassical influences but he later developed a distinct personal style based on direct observation of nature, as revealed by his landscape oil sketches.

Indeed, the present work, an intimate portrayal of a sleeping hound, was almost certainly executed in Italy directly from life.  Even on a small scale, the artist’s powers of immediate study and sensitive treatment of light are extremely evident.
