Born in Belgium, Louis Haghe was a pioneer of early lithography.  He moved to England permanently in 1823 and formed a partnership with William Day (1797-1845).  Day & Haghe subsequently became the most famous lithographic printing firm in early Victorian London, pioneering a variety of new printing techniques.

Haghe was also an accomplished watercolourist and enjoyed painting historical genre scenes with architectural interiors set in his native Belgium, such as the subject of the present print.  His versatility and productive nature were all the more impressive due to a deformity he had in his right hand from birth.
