William Simson was a diverse artist who executed portraits, landscapes and genre subjects. An example of the latter, the present work is a dynamic and atmospheric oil sketch of a scene in his native Scotland, likely a preparatory piece for a larger, hitherto unknown, picture. The study shows the influence of Simson’s better known contemporaries David Wilkie and Edwin Landseer and similarly captures an enduringly romantic view of Scotland for which they were renowned.
